Monday Message from the SRVUSD
Posted 3/1/21

This morning, the Governor announced that he had reached an agreement with legislators on SB/AB 86, legislation to return public schools to in-person instruction.  The Governor shared that the bill  is expected to be heard this Thursday and he expects to sign it on Friday.  When signed into law, it will provide funds to school districts to support the work required to return students to in-person instruction, beginning with the return of TK - second graders.  I am pleased that we are ahead of this announcement, as we have already returned students TK - 6th grade to some in-person.  For the SRVUSD, initial estimates are that we will receive approximately $19 million to direct towards reopening schools to in-person and to assist with learning acceleration.

This is timely information because our Board of Trustees has a special meeting planned for this Wednesday to  discuss returning all grades to in-person instruction.

There are 2 scheduled Board of Education meetings this week. We invite you to join us. If you are unable to join us live, the meetings will be recorded for viewing anytime on our YouTube Channel. Additionally, we plan to send a Board Brief following each meeting so that the community is informed about the outcomes and direction provided by the Board at the meetings. Please see below for information about each meeting.

Meeting #1:  Strategic Direction Workshop

Meeting Date: Tuesday, March 2, 2021

Meeting Time: 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.

The Board will meet on Tuesday, March 2nd  in the first of two workshops to begin the important work of setting our direction for the future.  The pandemic has created significant challenges and disruptions, but currently presents leadership teams the opportunity to examine what we have learned; what we want to maintain or grow;  and what we can jettison, so we can chart a solid strategic direction for improved excellence.   Focused, clear goals help the organization align resources and establish shared values and commitments.  This March 2nd Board meeting is the first in a set of two strategic planning workshops. Following this first discussion, we will let our employees, families, students and community members know how they may engage their voice in the process.

Meeting #2: Report, Review and Action Related to Reopening Schools Spring and Fall 2021

Meeting Date: Wednesday, March 3, 2021

Meeting Time: 4 p.m - 7 p.m.

SRVUSD YouTube Channel

The Board will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, March 3rd to discuss the return to campus for all grade levels for the fall 2021 semester.  We have successfully returned students in grades TK (transitional kindergarten/age 4) through 6th grade and students with special needs, and now we want to clarify when we can return grades 7 -12.

The Wednesday Board meeting will come after the County Department of Public Health posts its weekly update regarding Contra Costa County’s health metrics, so this timely review of our county’s health status can inform the Board’s discussion and direction regarding students returning to all campuses and classrooms. Important Note: SRVUSD will continue to offer online learning for families who feel this is the prudent option for their circumstance.
